While browsing Rottentomatoes.com this morning, I discovered an intriguing new film coming out called Big River Man. It documents the story of long-distance swimmer Martin Strel and his struggle to swim the Amazon river. The Amazon is the second longest river in the world, at 7062 kilometers in length, and it is filled with dangerous creatures. Strel had already swum the Danube, Mississippi and Yangtze rivers prior to the Amazon, all to raise awareness about river pollution. The synopsis of Big River Man on rottentomatoes describes Strel as “a rather overweight, horseburger loving Slovenian in his fifties who drinks two bottles of red wine a day… even when swimming“.
I love stories about eccentric characters, but this picture of Strel is what really captured my attention. He looks exactly like my Dad, who is also Slovenian. I wonder what must be in the waters of Slovenia to explain such crazy national heros as Martin Strel and Nikola Tesla?
