I’ve blogged about Warren Ellis once before. I think really highly of the guy and, in particular, his short little three issue comic Red is super-great. It revolves around a retired CIA agent, Paul Moses, at the turn of a presidency in the US. The new leaders decide that he knows too much and must be eliminated. There’s just one problem: Paul Moses is one hard-nosed sonofabitch, and anyone that wants to snuff him out had better bring along an army. Suffice to say, hijinks ensue and many die.
Not too long ago the story for Red got optioned for a movie, which just began filming in Toronto a week or two ago. They’ve changed the name of the main character to Frank Moses, and he’ll be played by Bruce Willis. I recall reading on Ellis’s blog that the story has been altered a bit: more characters have been added, and likely other elements as well, so that the story will work on the big screen. The script got an okay from Ellis (who is in Toronto now, presumably making sure they don’t screw things up too badly), so I’m not too pessimistic about these changes yet. Also upon considering that three of the new characters will be played by Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman and John Malkovich, the changes become even more palatable.
Unfortunately I’ve got stuff to do here in Montreal right now. God damn would it be fun to roadtrip out to the Tdot and go hunting for Warren Ellis, though!
Oh, and the film is scheduled to hit theaters Oct 22, 2010.
